November 12th
A Foreign Field
(1993, Drama, Comedy, 95 minutes, BBC-Not Rated)

As a tribute to Veteran's Day
The setting is Normandy, where a group of D-Day veterans, two British and one American, are returning for the 50th anniversary of the invasion to visit an old buddy's grave. An all-star cast plays seemingly ordinary people, each with his or her own spark.

The late Sir Alec Guiness, whose career was made largely on his impeccable gift of speech, here plays a man practically mute. Leo McKern, of "Rumpole" fame, is a crusty old Brit and John Randolph plays the American veteran. Jeanne Moreau portrays an elderly floozy whose wartime favors still remain in the fond memories of these old men. Lauren Bacall plays her part with a little mystery that is revealed in the poignant final scene. Together, they form an odd camaraderie, bound by the past as they share their memories.

November 19th
My Sister's Keeper
(2009, Drama, 109 minutes, Rated PG-13)

Eleven year old Anna Fitzgerald, played by Abigail Breslin, attempts to earn medical emancipation from her parents, who, until now, have relied on Anna to help their leukemia-stricken daughter, Kate, remain alive. Cameron Diaz plays Anna’s mother and Alec Baldwin plays the lawyer hired by Anna. Based on the novel by Jodi Picoult.

December 3rd
Angels and Demons
(2009, Mystery, Thriller, 138 minutes, Rated PG-13)

Enjoy the second Dan Brown book-to-movie starring Tom Hanks as Harvard symbologist Dr. Robert Langdon. The Pope has died, and the four preferitti (primary hopefuls for the papacy) are kidnapped. A threat of their hourly demise is issued by a persecuted group known as the Illuminati. With time steadily counting down, Langdon, and beautiful physicist Vittoria Vetra, travel throughout Rome to unravel the hidden signs that will lead them to a terrifying adversary and a harrowing discovery.

December 10th
Star Trek
(2009, Adventure, Sci Fi, 127 minutes, Rated PG-13)

In this movie, which pays homage to the TV series of the 1960's, the characters of Kirk, Spock, Bones, Scotty, Uhura, Sulu and Chekov have been recast as their younger selves. The actors uncannily channel their predecessors' mannerisms and expressions, especially those of Wm. Shatner, Leonard Nimoy and DeForest Kelley. A fun and exciting chronicle of the early days of James T. Kirk and his fellow USS Enterprise crew members!

December 17th
Julie and Julia
(2009, Biography, Romance, Comedy, 123 min, PG-13)

The story of Julia Child's start in the cooking profession is intertwined with blogger Julie Powell's 2002 challenge to cook all the recipes in Child's first cookbook in a movie with laughs, tears, and exquisite food. Both women discover that with the right combination of passion, fearlessness and butter, anything is possible. Meryl Streep, Amy Adams, and Stanley Tucci, as Paul Child, are wonderful. Based on the book by Julie Powell.
