ADULT LITERACY PROGRAM The Township of Washington Library seeks energetic individuals to join our team of Literacy Volunteers of Pascack Valley. There are many adults in the Township who need assistance in learning basic English skills. They need one-on-one practice in reading and writing. Recently, The Task Force on Adult Literacy reported that "between 43 to 51 percent of New Jersey's Adults
function at the lowest two of five levels of literacy."
All volunteers are trained at the Westwood Public Library over a period of 5 (five) Tuesday evenings. Training is free to volunteers from the Township.
This is an excellent opportunity for any adult seeking to help other individuals help themselves. For more information call the Library 201-664-4586.
READING
GROUPS
People join reading groups for two main reasons: they like to read and they like to talk about what they have read. Reading groups are flourishing across the nation
- connecting interesting people with each other and answering a need for intelligent conversation. Books provide a springboard for members to exchange ideas, engage in debate, and share memorable insights.
The Township of Washington Public Library presently hosts 2 (two) ADULT READING GROUPS that meet on the fourth Monday of the month. One group meets at 10:30 a.m. and the other at
7:30 p.m. Reading material is selected by the members of each group and covers a wide range of contemporary and classic literature. The library supplies the books, a place for discussion, and assistance with book reviews and author biographies.
We can even screen the movie version when available! If you would like to join a reading group or start one of your own, please contact
Jane Kingsland at 201-664-4586 or by email: kingsland@bccls.org
.
The library also hosts a PARENT/CHILD READING GROUP. This group meets the third Thursday of the month at 7 p.m. and the program runs from September through to June. This is a great way from a parent to interact, relate and communicate with his or her child.
Please call Maria Halzack at 201-664-4586 for more information.
