Adult Programs We screen free movies every Thursday afternoon at 2pm - a different theme every month! Bring your friends and don't be shy - let us know if you would like us to show your favorite movie on the big screen!

We also invite speakers and performers to the Library, usually on the weekends. This year we will host George Washington, a Victorian Lady, a Celtic Storyteller, and Ichabod Chrane near Hallowe'en - just to mention a few! Other programs include Travel Songs and Jewelry-making classes.

The Collection We provide circulating fiction and nonfiction books for the reading pleasure and research needs of Library card holders.  Reader's services also includes interlibrary loan - this service allows BCCLS library card holders to borrow items found outside of BCCLS system libraries.

The Library provides access to many electronic resources including encyclopedias, New York Times from 1851 to present day, magazine and journal articles on many academic and popular subjects, not to mention biographies, history, science, business and health, among many others. Please call us for guidance with databases.

Electronic information is new to many and so the Library provides one-hour classes to individuals and small groups. We offer the following classes:

Introduction to your PC - Start at the beginning! How to use the mouse and anatomy of a web page. We will show you online mouse and  typing tutors so that you can practice at your leisure!

Introduction to the Internet and how to use a search engine - Revision of  "anatomy of a web page" and the wonders of Google.

What is a database and why would I use it? Find out how to find current or historic articles on topics that interest you, using databases such as EbscoHost and Proquest. Also, how to use Facts On File for history related interests, CountryWatch, online encyclopedias, etc.

Basic Introduction to Word. Create a document and learn to manipulate and save text.

Introduction to E-mail. Keep in touch with this great tool! Learn how to write, send save and send images.

Please call the Library to make an appointment - or drop by! Call Jane Kingsland at (201) 664-4586. (Back to top)

ADULT LITERACY PROGRAM

The Township of Washington Library seeks energetic individuals to join our team of Literacy Volunteers of Pascack Valley. There are many adults in the Township who need assistance in learning basic English skills. They need one-on-one practice in reading and writing. Recently, The Task Force on Adult Literacy reported that "between 43 to 51 percent of New Jersey's Adults function at the lowest two of five levels of literacy."

All volunteers are trained at the Westwood Public Library over a period of 5 (five) Tuesday evenings. Training is free to volunteers from the Township.

This is an excellent opportunity for any adult seeking to help other individuals help themselves. For more information call the Library 201-664-4586.

READING GROUPS

People join reading groups for two main reasons: they like to read and they like to talk about what they have read.  Reading groups are flourishing across the nation - connecting interesting people with each other and answering a need for intelligent conversation.  Books provide a springboard for members to exchange ideas, engage in debate, and share memorable insights.

The Township of Washington Public Library presently hosts 2 (two) ADULT READING GROUPS that meet on the fourth Monday of the month.  One group meets at 10:30 a.m. and the other at 7:30 p.m.  Reading material is selected by the members of each group and covers a wide range of contemporary and classic literature.  The library supplies the books, a place for discussion, and assistance with book reviews and author biographies.  We can even screen the movie version when available! If you would like to join a reading group or start one of your own, please contact Jane Kingsland at 201-664-4586 or by email: kingsland@bccls.org .

The library also hosts a PARENT/CHILD READING GROUP. This group meets the third Thursday of the month at 7 p.m. and the program runs from September through to June. This is a great way from a parent to interact, relate and communicate with his or her child. Please call Maria Halzack at 201-664-4586 for more information.
